Updating a kitchen, step by step

Posted by rrashfor

I am working with a client on updating her kitchen.  She is going about it very methodically and budget conscious – and it is turning out great. I thought blog readers would enjoy the process.

First – my client is one who takes risks and wants her home to reflect herself, her personality and has fun in the process too! She is a busy professional, she is co-owner of a successful marketing company based in Bethesda, MD.  The family consists of her 2 teenage daughters, nanny and 2 year old daughter…who all co-exist in the space.  Always lots going on at home!

We have worked together for about 4 years, but she took a hiatus from design to focus on her business. I was called back in Fall of 2010 to find the kitchen seen here:

Cabinets were refaced with bamboo fronts, new stainless steel appliances installed and tile left by the former owner was removed.

So the items we were to work on include

Lighting – it was WAY too dark in the space.

Flooring – she HATED the white floor! too much dirt – she has a busy family and of course, the kitchen is the busiest place in the house. She wanted the floor to be darker and by darker – yes she meant black!

Updating the counter from the laminate to something more solid and durable.

Painting walls and selecting back splash.

So first order of business was selecting the floor and getting the lighting taken care of.  We went round and round on flooring but once I found the right sample, that was it!  It was perfect and we both loved it.  She has already chosen a Ceasarstone that I approved so the work was done quickly.  Here is how things looked in December 2010.

Pretty good huh? The floors turned out lovely – I was able to find a laminate with a hint of the brown/cinnamon color to pull in the bamboo and meet her need for a dark floor. It looks really cool in real life too! And my electrician totally hooked us up with great recessed lighting, and under cabinet lighting – hurray! Things are looking up!

Now onto the paint colors and tile for backsplash. Well – we finally got the paint colors figured out and had that done over the holiday break. She also streamlined the accessories although some are coming back in, we are still trying to figure out what will go where. but here is the latest pic

I am loving the grey – doesn’t it look smart in the space? Of course, you can see what next project is – that is backsplash. We made a choice and hope to have that done within the next month or so. Check back to see the final product – with the accessories and cool backsplash!
