Why its time to stop offering Interior Decorating/Design services

Posted by rrashfor

Welcome to 2011!! I have been busy reviewing my wins and losses over 2010 and have to say that I am estatic it is a new year. 2010 was one of my most frustrating years in business!

Sure – it started out grand – new business partnership with local DC retailer for blinds and shades, staging relationships with active realtors and a new whole large house window project.  Through a series of turns and twists, the blinds and shades partnership let me deflated with a modest return, the home staging work dried up mid-year (after the tax credit ended) and the whole house project went from great, to when-will-this-end??  The vendor completely let me (and my client) down time after time after time. And since my company was between the vendor and the client, guess who got completely screwed in the end?  You guessed it!

anti sandwichWhat I did learn is to not put myself in such a vulnerable position again. The nature of interior design/decorator services requires  that designers rely on vendors to successfully perform, execute and deliver agreed upon customized products and services AND that designers rely on clients to compensate designers for time, effort and energy spent in selecting, follow-up, follow-through of said products and services. But BOTH of sides can have varying levels of commitment and dedication to the project, and subject to interpretation. And quite frankly, I have no desire to continue to put myself in the middle of that sandwich!

So I am giving up the interior decorator sandwich, and make more of a ‘meal’ from my current sides dishes, namely blinds and shades and home staging.  Here’s looking forward to a better and healthier entree to  appear in 2011.  I am sure tired of egg on my face!

Keep your eyes here for new happenings, changes and activity. Hope you noticed the new name for the blog, new theme…starting off the New Year with the right attitude!
