A common decorating mistake…have you done this?

Posted by rrashfor

We’ve been visiting folks homes for over six years and helping with decorating and design dilemmas. One common mistake we have seen over the years is getting proportions right – in design speak that is called SCALE. We have highlighted a few specifics below and hope this can help so you can make a successful next furniture purchase!

The problem with this corner here is both  scale and material choice. Not only is this an extremely tall room, the kitchen ledge sits much higher than the glass console table.  The table looks dwarfed and out of place!  To remedy this situation two things are suggested – use a taller console or accent table, only a few inches shorter than the ledge so it looks purposeful. Second a thick console table or small buffet with storage, in either wood or metal, would give this corner some pizzaz.

Next is a dilemma we see all too often  – too much furniture in a space. While this is showing only half of the room, this half seems stuffed with red! We like that they were able to successfully divide the room into appropriate live-able portions BUT it is obvious that the homeowners were sunk by showroom/ salesman antics. Just because they offer the furniture in a set, doesn’t mean you have to purchase said set. When you walk into this space, your eye is drawn to the furniture and not the space itself. One red sofa in a space is all you need, and two chairs opposite the larger sofa would have really opened up the space. Removing the heavy drapery would do wonders!

We hope this advice is helpful and would love to help anyone who is savvy enough to submit their picture for critique and advice from our team. We promise not to divulge names or locations!
